Erkka Nissinen, What is Community?, 2016, Animated film / Ink Drawings

Booth 0/6/1

Erkka Nissinen’s absurdist approach to reality creates humoristic and often obscene situations. His work discloses a critical take on the difficulties of social interaction, philosophy, and on the language of media—such as children’s television, educational programs, or porn, which are often all mashed up into one. Nissinen’s body of work contains videos, performances, music scores, sound tracks and installations.
His video works mix clumsy acting with the glossy images of HD video and computer animation to create eccentric and inimitable visuals. In his ‘dark room installations’ Nissinen combines objects, sound, light and video. With these four components he illuminates various objects at different moments and creates an associative narrative around them.

LISTE 2016
The latest video installation that will be on show during Liste 2016 is ‘What is Community’, an animated film with a voice over done by Nissinen. All the original drawings that are used in the video will be presented as part of the installation. A selection of earlier videos and paintings will accompany this solo presentation at Liste.

Next to this, we are delighted to announce that Erkka Nissinen is selected for the Pavilion of Finland during the 57th Venice Biennale with a proposal for ‘The Aalto Natives’, a project in collaboration with Nathaniel Mellors, who he met during his residency at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam in 2007. The exhibition at the Pavilion of Finland is curated by Xander Karskens, who has worked with both Nissinen and Mellors in solo exhibitions at ‘de Hallen’ in Haarlem, which holds work of both artists in their collection.
