Artissima 2024: Simnikiwe Buhlungu : Present Future Section

1 - 3 November 2024
Booth 5, Black Corridor https://www.artissima.art/en/

We are delighted to participate in the 2024 edition of Artissima with a presentation by Simnikiwe Buhlungu in the Present Future section, Booth 5, Black Corridor.

Present Future is the section of Artissima that showcases emerging talents. The artists, presented by their reference galleries, are selected on the basis of a specific project. The section features monographic projects with the goal of shedding light on new, more significant and cutting-edge trends on the international art scene. The section is curated by Léon Kruijswijk (curator, KW Institute for Contemporary Art — Berlin) and Joel Valabrega (curator, Galeria Municipal do Porto — Porto).

Simnikiwe Buhlungu’s presentation will feature a configuration of existing works activated by live readings debuting text-as draft/draft-as-text. Four modular Khuaya stands, arranged in an orientation that invites listening and pondering, will host short activated readings of existing anecdotes, thoughts and writings on listening, polyphony and sound as a storage mechanism by readers twice a day on each day of the fair. A remnant of a metal tube loop artwork–iterating from Buhlungu’s long time, lung time continuuuum!!! (A conver-something) presented by IMAI-Inter Media Art Institute and KIT (Kunst im Tunnel), Düsseldorf earlier this year–will exist alongside its sonic companion from the same conver-something, composed on a Juno-6 synthesiser. While fairs tend to function around high foot traffic and passing engagement, this presentation tries to find space within the activity of Artissima to ask for pausing and listening.

Performance schedule:
Twice every day, from 12 to 12:05 hrs, and from 15 to 15:05 hrs.
Perfomers: Jazmina Figueroa, Nolwenn Salaun, and Léon Kruijswijk.

Alongside the main presentation at Artissima, we are delighted to announce the participation of Pauline Boudry/Renate Lorenz and Pauline Curnier Jardin in The Underground Cinema, an exhibition by Artissima curated by Irene Calderoni at Gallerie d'Italia, Torino, from November 1 to 3.
