Clara Amaral will premiere the Portuguese version of She gave it to me I got it from her//Ela deu-me eu dela recebi at Biblioteca Camões, Lisbon from the 16th to the 20th of October. She will perform it three times a day. The performance is co-produced by Teatro do Bairro Alto, Materiais Diversos and Anda&Fala, and supported by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.
She gave it to me I got it from her revolves around five generations of women in Clara Amaral's family, and particularly focuses on her grandmother, Maria Joana Cruz dos Santos, who couldn't read nor write. What could be understood as a detail in a family setting turns out to be a socio-cultural context that many women in Portugal had to face until the reform of the education system in 1950, which bypassed the exclusion of women due to their gender and social status. The performance is comprised of a book and a choreography, read aloud and handled by a performer, for six people at a time.
