PERFORMANCE | ZHANA IVANOVA | ROYALTY | 2016
Zhana Ivanova’s practice centers on rearranging and reconfiguring daily patterns and systems to which we have grown accustomed. She often uses performance in order to artificially induce situations in which social and power relations fluctuate. Her constructions are initially formal and rule-governed; yet within them she insistently exposes the ambiguity of her own rules.
In this performance “Royalty”, the actors (informed, but unrehearsed) are performing a pre-scripted situation. The scene unfolds by means of a prerecorded soundtrack, each player keeping up with an individual voiceover. As what we hear falls in and out of synch with what we see, a fluctuating interplay unfolds between what is determined and what is spontaneous.

ARTISTS' FILM | PAULINE CURNIER JARDIN | THE RESURRECTION PLOT | 2015
Via a series of singing tableaux vivants drawn from a wealth of historic and anachronistic sources as diverse as witchcraft, voguing, and the animal kingdom, the artist plays across sixteenth century pageantries. The performance pays tribute to Renaissance “misfits,” among them painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, ceramicist Bernard Palissy, and writer François Rabelais, all known for the overgrown and carnivalesque saturation of natural elements in their work. With her way of juxtaposing incongruous elements — where regenerative animals such as lizards and cicadas meet allegories of planets — Curnier Jardin creates an eccentric “Gesamtkunstwerk” that reconsiders the Renaissance from a subversive perspective, challenging the figure of the “Renaissance Man” and its conquering hubris.
